History Biographical
Originally known as the Newlands Community Club, the Newlands Community Society started some time in the 1920s. Initially the club consisted of members who lived around the Newlands School District, holding biweekly meetings in the homes of its members. Many of its activities were directly involved with the Newlands School, assisting with decorations and school events, although they arranged some community events as well. When the Newlands school closed in 1944 due to the school district being amalgamated into the Lethbridge School Division, the Newlands Community Club sough to purchase the school building to use as a community hall. In order to do this, they registered as a society in 1947, gaining status in March, and officially changing their name to the Newlands Community Society. Later that month they purchased the building, which would become known as the Newlands Hall, for $250. Membership in the society gradually dwindled, forcing it to briefly close between 1958-1962. After recommencing, they began holding monthly meetings in the Newlands Hall, making yearly charity donations, arranging fund raising projects, and holding regular social events such as dances and BBQs. Its three biggest projects, funded by grants and fundraising, were to repair and remodel the Newlands Hall, hold a Newlands reunion in 1973, and erect a cairn in 1980 in celebration of Alberta’s 75th anniversary. Membership later began to dwindle again, leading to the society selling the Newlands Hall to Outlook Port LTD in 1997. They continued to operate at the Miners Club in Lethbridge for some time before having their final meeting in 1906.
