History Biographical

In 1974, residents in the London Road neighbourhood formed a group dedicated to preserving the qualities of the historical London Road area in Lethbridge, Alberta. The London Road Neighbourhood Association (LRNA) was incorporated as a society under the Societies Act of Alberta on September 27, 1976. According to LRNA’s Bylaws, the boundaries of the Association “shall be from 1st street south to 13th street south; 9th avenue south to 3rd avenue south, not including the downtown business district north of 6th avenue south and west of 11 street south”. All residents of the London Road neighbourhood, 18 years or older, may be a member of the Association and hold voting rights within the Association meetings. The Association collected fees for general membership to the Association. LRNA included elected board members from the Association, and the Board of Directors consisted of a President, Vice President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, and eight Members at Large. Directors served a term of one year. The President and Treasurer served terms of two years, and the Vice President and Secretary served terms of two years. Each board member was able to serve a maximum of 6 consecutive years. The vision statement for the London Road Neighbourhood: “London Road will be an authentic, livable, diverse, and innovative community for its residents, and businesses. This will be achieved by enhancing the value of its historical qualities, diverse population, and openness to creatively promoting quality sustainable and innovative redevelopment.” The London Road neighbourhood, one of Lethbridge’s oldest neighbourhoods, was known for its character homes, and many of the homes in the neighbourhood were built before 1914. The LRNA aimed to maintain “the qualities of the historical London Road neighbourhood that make it one of the finest communities in the City”.
