History Biographical

The 1988 Winter Olympics, officially known as The XV Olympic Winter Games, took place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1988. The Winter Games were played between February 13 and 27, 1988. The majority of the Winter Games events took place in Calgary, and some events were held at the Nakiska Ski Resort in Kananaskis Country, as well as the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park in the town of Canmore, AB. The 1988 Olympic Torch Relay began in November, 1987 with a ceremony in Olympia, Greece where the Olympic Torch was lit. The Torch travelled across Canada in the Olympic Torch Relay that began in St. John’s Newfoundland and covered approximately 18, 0000 km. The relay stretched across 88 days through every province and territory in Canada. It arrived in Calgary on February 13, 1988. There were 88 torchbearers in the Olympic Torch Relay, one person selected for each day of the relay. Rick Hansen carried the torch into Calgary and handed the torch over to Robyn Perry, the last torchbearer, for the final few steps to light the cauldron. The 1988 Winter Games officially began with the torch lighting ceremony and the Opening Ceremony on February 13, 1988.
