- History Biographical
- The Galt #8 Society was formed in 1993 as a not-for-profit community organization that works to save the Galt # 8 site and educate the public on the coal mining industry in the Lethbridge area. The group became concerned with preserving the history of the Galt # 8 mine site and they wanted to promote the site as a tourism Historic Site in Lethbridge. Their main objectives include cooperating with locals and local governments in order to ensure the site remains protected, preserved and designated as a Historic Site. In 1997, the Society created a National Coal Centre Project, called the World of Black Diamonds. This project aimed to be the new millennium commemoration project on the Galt # 8 mine site; including becoming the main information centre for the history and future of coal in the region. Wim Vonkeman was a founding member of the Galt # 8 Mine Historic Site Society, and the Project Coordinator for the World of Black Diamonds project, and he helped created the Society’s website. According to their webisite, the Galt # 8 Mine Historic Site Society has completed various projects aimed at coal mining and coal industry education, including “People of the Mines” book project in collaboration with the University of Lethbridge and Garry Allison, and their future projects include rebuilding the old mine workers bus (https://www.galt8.org/projects-2/).
