History Biographical
Haru Moriyama was born in Kumamoto City, Japan in 1892. She was the middle child of Kiemon and Itsu Yoshizaki. She was adopted by the Yaota family, and lived in a small farming village. Haru’s husband, Toyoki Moriyama was born in 1889 at Kumansho Machi, Shimomashiki Gun, Kumamoto Ken., Japan. He left Japan after his graduation at 16 and travelled to Hawaii, U.S.A. where he worked in a sugar factory. After years working in Hawaii, Toyoki immigrated to Canada in 1907. He settled around Vancouver, B.C. area and worked in a saw mill and other jobs. At 23, his family arranged his marriage to Haru Moriyama, age 20. The two were married in December, 1912. Haru left Japan and immigrated to Canada on December 27, 1912. She arrived in Victoria, B.C. on January 23, 1913. The couple had ten children together: Midori (born in 1914), Toshiyuki (Tashi; born in 1916), Naoto (1918-1918), Nawoyuki (Nups; was born in Port Moody, 1919), Fumiko (Fumi; born 1922), Momoyo (Momo or Mary; born 1924), Kiyoshi (Kiyo; born 1926), Masao (born 1929) and Haruo (Harpo; born 1931), Yaeko (1933-1933). The family moved throughout western B.C., following Toyoki’s jobs. They settled in Mission City around 1928, where they lived on a farm and were active in their community within the area; including as members of the Buddhist Church. They left Mission City, B.C. in 1942. The Moriyama family were one of the first families evacuated from the Mission City area to a beet farm in southern Alberta due to the 1941 federal government’s evacuation of Japanese Canadians from western B.C. The family was relocated to Coalhurst where they were faced many hardships working on a sugar beet farm in Shaughnessy. After their internment, Toyoki Moriyama bought a farm in Picture Butte, and was active in many sports, including judo. He helped establish a judo club in Picture Butte in 1943. As the children got older, they moved throughout Canada for jobs and education. According to a family history account from Fumi and Haru Moriyama: Midori, Fumi, Haru and Toyoki settled in Lethbridge, Toshiyuki (Tash) settled in Ontario, Nawoyuki settled in Calgary, Kiyoshi settled in Picture Butte with their respective families.
