History Biographical
On July 4 and 5, 1931, Rotary members from the United States and Canada met in Waterton at the Prince of Wales Hotel for a goodwill meeting. The meeting involved over 100 members from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Montana. Alberta’s committee was chaired by Rev. S. H. Middleton of the Cardston Rotary Club, and Montana’s committee was chaired by Harry B. Mitchell, then President of Rotary Great Falls. At the meeting, it was agreed that the two countries establish a monument of nature, to recognize the long-lasting relationship of peace and goodwill between Canada and the United States. In January 1932, the committees collaborated on the plan for the dedication of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. After a long process from both governments, eventually the “Rotarian's on both sides of the border successfully lobbied their respective politicians and in the short time of one year, the Governments of Canada and the United States approved the establishment of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park which was dedicated on June 18th, 1932. Authorized by the U.S. Congress and Canada's Parliament, the peace park designation combines the 203-square-mile Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada with the 1,600-square-mile Glacier National Park in the United States. The arrangement allows both national parks to operate as separate entities under the peace park mantle. Each September, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Association (WGIPPA) hosts a goodwill gathering at the peace park. In even years, Rotarian's from nearly 150 clubs within the three districts meet on the U.S. side, and in odd years on the Canadian side.” (Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, History, https://www.watertonglacierpeacepark.org/history.html). According to “The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park Association” address presented by Dr. Glenn H. Coulter in 1994, the objectives of the Association include: 1) The fostering of friendly international relations and goodwill between the citizens of the countries of Canada and the United States of America, and in particular the Province of Alberta and the State of Montana. 2) To exemplify to the world at large that nations with common boundaries can live in permanent peace, harmony and friendship. Today, the Rotary Clubs in Districts 5080, 5360, 5370 and 5390 continue their active engagement with the Peace Park through the International Peace Park Association. However, membership into the Association is open to all Rotary Clubs of Rotary International. Each annual meeting of the Association ends with the “Hands Across the Border Ceremony”, that solidifies the partnership between the United States and Canada.
