History Biographical

The Young Men’s Christian Association began in London in 1844 by George Williams, as a way to bring young Christian men together to build friendships and religious support systems. The YMCA moved to Canada in 1851. The Lethbridge YMCA opened in 1910. For decades, the YMCA served as a gathering place for young Christian men to grow in their spiritual lives and to maintain their physical health as well. The popularity of the YMCA grew to include people of all backgrounds and promoted a healthy lifestyle; to grow in mind, body and spirit. The YMCA has expanded to include a variety of fitness classes and facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, child day camps, child day care, personal training, and more. According to their website, the Lethbridge YMCA’s core values are: caring, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, and responsibility. The Lethbridge Family YMCA building cost $1,046,000 to build. The provincial government provided a $100,000 grant for the project while the balance of the money was raised through fundraising by the YMCA. At the time the building was opened, the local YMCA had raised $965,000 and was continuing to solicit donations to make up the $81,000 balance owing on the building.
