- History Biographical
- The Boy Scout movement was created by Sir Baden-Powell of Gilwell in England. Born to a family of eight children, Baden-Powell became a dedicated student and an advocate of the education of young boys into mature and honorable men in society. He established a club for boys on Brown Sea Island in 1908 that was based in character-building, lesson-learning, games and friendship. Baden-Powell then extended the club into Canada, with the first club stationed in Manitoba in 1908, and the movement grew to include councils and clubs all across Canada. For over 100 years, the movement held strong ties to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that encouraged their young boys and men to join the Boy Scouts. The Church and the Boy Scouts are no longer affiliated today. In 2015, the Boy Scouts Association announced that they would be bringing changes to their organization. Some of the changes included a name change to ‘Scouts Canada’ and the inclusion of girls and members of the LGBTQ+ community into the organization. The Scouts of Southern Alberta belong to the Chinook Council, and include over 10,000 adult and youth scouts. Today, Scouts Canada teach their members about friendships, leadership skills, nature skills, critical thinking and team work. They have camps, hiking activities, and volunteering opportunities within the community. There are 5 separate age groups in the Scouts organization and their members range in ages from 5-26 years old.
