History Biographical

Birthright Lethbridge, a branch of an internationally recognized organization, opened its office in Lethbridge in June 1979. A non-denominational, free and confidential group staffed by volunteers and funded entirely by charitable donations, its guiding principle was to give every pregnant woman the right to give birth and every child the right to be born. The organization maintained a crisis centre where any pregnant female could find help. At the centre pregnant women were provided with emotional and practical support as well as resources to plan a future for herself and her child. Accommodation could be arranged in carefully selected shelter homes either in Lethbridge or other communities. Birthright also worked to remove the social stigma associated with the unwed mother and her child and encouraged an understanding of the needs of all pregnant females. After 38 years of service, the organization closed its offices in 2019.
