The McLean Mutual Telephone Company (1936-1972) was created under the auspices of the Rural Mutual Telephone Companies Act (1935). The purpose of the company was to provide multi-party telephone service to the people in its assigned district. First officers of the company were: Harry Boulton, President; H. Snowden, Secretary-Treasurer; and W.H. Drinkall and Thomas Neve, Directors.

According to the donor, the Rural Mutual Telephone Companies were created because Alberta Government Telephones could no longer afford to maintain rural telephone service. in the late 1960s A.G.T. was again in the position to provide rural telephone service, and in 1972 the Mclean Mutual Telephone Company was dissolved. The man who made the motion to end the company was the donor, George R. Boulton, son of Harry Boulton.
