- Scope and Content
- Alex Kaleta was a Canadian professional hockey player, born in Canmore, AB. He played in the NHL for the Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers. He is best known for his part in originating hockey's hat trick tradition, which is recognized in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He went into a Toronto shop before a game against the Maple Leafs, and reached an agreement with the shop owner. If Kaleta scored three goals during the game, the shop owner would give him a free hat, thus creating the Hat Trick. Kaleta played for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs in 1940, before playing in the NHL for the Chicago Black Hawks in 1941-42 season.
