This VHS is among a variety of films used by the Galt Museum & Archives for public and for educational purposes. Some were produced by the National Film Board, local 2&7, CFCN and Global Television stations.
Scope and Content
Film talks about the experiences of people across Alberta in World War II. It also gives the history of the war years. Interviews for the film included: Harold Van Wiebe (Royal Canadian Navy), David Smith (Royal Canadian Airforce), Francis Buckan (I.O.D.E).Blackout Propaganda at the home front during the war. Interview with Jean Florndine (I.O.D.E). Home front war effort through bonds, collection of scrap metal and others. Interview with John McLeod (Royal Canadian Air force). Women began to move into men jobs due to the shortage of men at the home front, food was also rationed. Music became very important during the war years. Dance halls were full. Black out Lots of airfield built in Western Canada. Interview with Lt. General Waters. 52 air schools in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Interview with Gordon Jones (Flying offer) and Scott Ellis (No. 5 E.F.T.S student). Information about the POW No. 133 camp Lethbridge. Interview with Harry Pohl (Former POW) and Alex Johnston (Former POW Guard). Both walk through the location were the camp stood. Black out Footage of the end of the war. Interview with Mrs. Webster (I.O.D.E) and Bill Macfarlane. Talks about the memorials for November 11 Remembrance Day. Interview with Don Newman (HMCS Athabaskan) talks about his experience at the gravesites. Interview with Doreen Cristofferson (War Bride) talks about her experiences with Remembrance Day. Young people talk about the importance of remembering the past and the importance of Remembrance Day. Closing remarks. A CFCN News Production
