History Biographical
George McKillop Elementary school was on 22 Street North and between 4 and 5 Avenues. It was opened in 1957 and closed in 1982 when Nicholas Sheran School opened on the West side. It became McKillop Curriculum Center then it was purchased by the Society of Christian Education and became Immanuel Christian Elementary School in 2006.
Scope and Content
Mr. George Bremner McKillop was born in 1896 in Lethbridge. He was a prominent Lethbridge figure with many accomplishments. McKillop went overseas during World War I and when he came back he was able to attain a job as a physical education teacher. He later became the Supervisor of Physical Education for Lethbridge School District No. 51 and Chairman of the playgrounds commission. He was also the superintendent of Southminister United Sunday School and leader of a cadet corps for many years. McKillop organized and directed the Canyon Church Camp during the summer breaks. He was also the curator of Sir Alexander Galt museum and chairman of the archives committee of the Lethbridge Historical Society. McKillop died at the age of 77 on February 18, 1974.
