- About 20 northwest poplar trees in the 2300 block of 6th Avenue South were cut down by city crews at the request of residents of the area. The trees were victims of poplar gall mite. A spokesman for the parks and recreation department said the disease doesn’t usually kill trees but it does damage them and make them less attractive. He said many poplars in the city are affected and were being removed at the request of citizens. The boulevard was to be repaired and replanted with a different species of tree.
