Scope and Content

1.R. Savage - General Merchant 1902 The rear of the building was used for living guarters and extra few stocks and a place for riders and ranchers to stay overnight i they travelled from Brooks and possibly the American boarder in Chuckwagons. 2.Grassy Lake Hotel built by John Ell in 1906. 3.Grassy Lake Section House [orginally called Depot or Post Office] Adam Callger worked as a section hand. He got fingers frozen off and then trained in telegraphy. 4.Homesteaders moved in about 1906. Busines places, restaurants are seen in the photograph. 5.Mr. Larsen driving oxen team, breaking sod at Seven Persons. His daughter married Sam Hazell. She passed away in 1971. Mr. Hazell still resides in Grassy Lake. Mr. Larsen considered oxen could outwork horses, and were much more powerful. 6.Grassy Lake in its heyday about 1910-1912. 7.First restaurant and rooms built by Parker in 1906. He left the homestead to build rstaurant. 8.Standard Bank at the right of the photograph located on Front Street North. Stanley Buchanan was manager. He and H.A.Driggs dealt in real estate and loans. 9.Three Department stores, a Pool Hall and shop built by W. Salvage about 1912. To the right in the white building is a restaurant. 10.Mr. W. Slavage and family. The car was bought from Dr. Smythe of Medicine Hat. It orginally had steel wheels and ran on rails. Whever he [the doctor] was called out a team of horses would pull him on the rails to his patient. 11. Grassy Lake Hotel about 1911.
