- A new nursing care system began to evolve in 1971. Known as Progressive patient Care—Nursing Unit Assignment, it was tested on the surgical service of the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital for six months. By January, 1971 a study was under way to determine the feasibility of extending the system to other services. Patients were groups according to their needs and assigned to nursing stations. Instead of a central nursing station several stations were established located along the halls, each responsible for a reduced number of beds, according to patient needs. Lil Evanoff checks charts of partients assigned to her nursing statin. She was supplied with adequate nursing assistance and supply services leaving her free to focus her skills, time and energy to direct patient care. Each station was equipped with a portable cabinet containing medications and supplies required for the assigned patients.
