- Central School, the downtown 62 year old elementary public school closed its doors Dec. 22, 1970. The lowering of the flag and playing of a bugle call marked the official finale of the landmark which was opened in 1909 by Premier A. C. Rutherford. Central students moved into a new school complex, Fleetwood-Bawden School in January 1971 which replaced three schools Fleetwood, Susie Bawden and Central. The Central School land was a large parcel expected to be sold for business-residential development.
