History Biographical
Irma Dogterom was a Lethbridge historian who wrote many books about the city and its buildings. She was also instrumental in getting a new subdivision named for pioneer women of Lethbridge.

Notes compiled by Irma Dogterom. These home still stand today in the city and most appear to be very well kept up. Other interesting home are also still in use and stories to tell. 001-002 C.P.R. Houses 1231 & 1235 6th Avenue. Explanation given these appear to be supplied by the Canadian Pacific Railway for Ready Made Farms. They are duplicates and through the years owners have kept the paint pattern of the exterior. The houses were on the tax rolls in 1910 which was close to the Ready Made Farms in 1912. This accompanying illustration was taken from the 1913 catalog for the farms. The catalogue is in the Galt Archives and contains prices for houses, barns and outbuildings including the outdoor toilet [$25.00] Also a photocopy side view of the CPR house from the building design1913. 003 View of the A.V. Ave South built 1910 Barrowman listed as prop of City Sign Works in 1913 Henderson Directory. In 1927 was the manager. 023-024 Harry Bentley 613 13 Street South built in 1890? Irma’s note says “It is listed as the \ residence of Harry Bentley in 1913 who served as mayor in 1892-93 & 1896-98. The house was outside the main part of the city in 1890. Job Reed’s farm was nearer the city Centre at 6 Ave S and 13th Street. 025-026 A. W. Shackleford home 515 16TH Street South built in 1954. After Shackleford’s death the house was purchased by Ralph Thrall Jr. He gave it to the Baptist Church next door to satisfy a requirement of his father’s will. The resident at the time was Lois Porter, the granddaughter of Emma E. Coe Lethbridge 1st school teacher. 027 A.W.S.hackleford home 1517 4th Avenue South built in 1927 028 A W. Built 1909. Photo taken 2003. The house is now divided into apartments 057 Home at 1239 – 8th Avenue South A. Wm. Hoult salesman for Becker Lumber Company built ca1922 058 An Arts & Crafts home at 1110 -7 Avenue South 059 Five houses in a row which have similar plans 1001,1003,1005,1007&1009 8th Avenue South. All were entered in the tax rolls in 1910 and possibly had the same contractor. 060 1009 8th Avenue South similar to the other but with a different attic window. 061 1005 &1007 8 Avenue South 062 1102 7th Avenue South 063 544 12 Street South what looks like sandstone but it is concrete block. The story goes about an Italian marble bath tub was too heavy for the floor joists and fell through. Irma remembers this account. 070 2nd Cropley home 6th Ave & 28 St. South. The Cropley family owned an early motel/campground the Lakeside Cabins where the tennis courts today. They were ground breakers in the change in tourist travel in southern Alberta 071 Another view of the Cropley home on 6th Avenue. 072 Rear of the former Isolation Hospital turned into a duplex in 1925-1927. There was a family living in one side and an orphanage in the other side. Today it is an apartment house. 073 The front view of the former Isolation Hospital now an apartment house. 074 Dr. Stewart’s home 632 – 8th Street South. Brig. General Stewart for whom the Lethbridge Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is named, has been recognized as the home off the first Battery in Lethbridge. He was also a dentist. 075 House at 1101- 7th Avenue South Irma found this house interesting because of the Gingerbread” trim. 076 The house across from 11101 7th Avenue South The early leaded window caught Irma’s eye. Turret Homes 077 House at 652 11 Street South. Irma found turrets an interesting addition to early homes. 078 Same house as above. It is the home of A. L. Foster a farmer in 1911-1912. The trees are not so big. 079 A “Turret” house 611 – 11 St. S. 080 House at 294 – 7 A Avenue South which has interesting architectural features including a turret. 081 The Dean R. Yates home at 639 14 Street South 082 House at 711 – 11 Street South built in 1947 083 House at 2518 6 Avenue South taken March 2000 084 2-story house at 334 – 12 Street South. A bank manager’s home built comparable to the home in the east as his wife refused to come west unless she had a remainder of home in \ the east. 085 “The Castle” an early duplex at 7th Street and 9th Avenue South. One of the first residents was a man named “Mr. Castle”. Built 1909 086 New house built at 720 – 7 St. South in 1946 087-088 House at 1029 -9th Street North. Several small houses in North Lethbridge were representative of early miner’s houses. 089 Another example of a miner’s home at 918 – 9th Street North. 090 Small house at 1217 – 9 Avenue North. 091 The Connaught Mansion or Apartments turned into a framing shop. The original name was Prince Albert Apts. To match the Victoria Apartments around the corner on 3rd Avenue. 092 The Burgman home at 502 – 19th Street North. Mr Burgman built the York Hotel and other brick buildings in North Lethbridge including one on 13 Street North named the Burgman Block. 093 Another views of the Burgman home 094 Barn-style home on 16th Avenue South.
