History Biographical
The Honourable John A. Gogo was born in Toronto on February 15, 1932. One of eight children to G. Allan and Mamie Gogo, he studied economics and organization and administration at the University of Lethbridge. In 1949, Mr. Gogo joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served in the Korean War, as well as in Germany. He left the army in 1962, retiring with the rank of sergeant. He remained active with the Korea War Veterans Association throughout his life, where he was a Past-President. He worked to secure recognition from the government for Veterans service and sacrifice in the Korean War. Mr. Gogo was also active in the Lethbridge community, as a member of the Rotary Club and was involved in the Canadian Cancer Society. As a vocal advocate for Lethbridge, he received an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Lethbridge in 2007. On March 26, 1975, Mr. John Gogo was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as the MLA for Lethbridge-West. He was re-elected in the next four terms, serving 18 years in politics. During his political career, Mr. John Gogo, MLA served on numerous legislative committees, and he was appointed Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committees in 1986 to 1989. He served as Minister of Advanced Education from 1989 until 1992, and he retired in 1993. Upon his retirement from politics, Mr. Gogo created the ‘John Gogo Foundation’ that supports numerous community organizations in Lethbridge.
