- History Biographical
- Walter Ray Rickmyer and Rachel Lee (Wilson) Rickmyer married on November 29, 2000. In the fall of 1909 Walter and Rachel, and their two children Alice Mabel and Blanche Wilson, left South Dakota for Canada. They arrived in Lethbridge on March 17, 1910. The woman and children stayed in the Higgonbotham house on Third Avenue for three days until living quarters could be erected on the farm. Mr. Rickmyer travelled to Cardston by train, and then proceeded to Woolford by horse and carriage. The Rickmyers stayed with the Drakes while building their own house. In 1916, a group of ladies met and formed a society called the Willing Workers. Their main purpose was to assist the local Church Board, the center being in Cardston, and to look after the welfare of the people in the district. During the First and Second World Wars, the ladies made articles for the boys overseas, knitting and making bandages for the Red Cross. Mrs. Rickmyer was president of the group for some 14 years, and secretary-treasurer for 21 years. Money was raised from bazaars, ice cream socials, and the annual chicken supper, which was held in the home. By July 11, 1911, first steps were taken towards getting a school in the district; Mrs. Rickmyer was appointed secretary-treasurer. She held the position until 1914, and was re-elected in 1921, and held that office until the consolidation of seven schools in 1941, with the exception of a few years when Will Dawson kept the books. Mrs. Rickmyer was also the secretary-treasurer for the Baseball Club for the Baseball Club, her church, and the Get-Together-Club. Walter Rickmyer passed away June 14, 1964 at age 92 years. Rachel Rickmyer passed away December 1, 1972, at age 93 years.
