History Biographical

Terry A. Bland was born in England on 24 December 1924. His formal education was completed in England, and his post secondary training was as a civil engineer. During his years in England, Mr. Bland worked for the Eastern Gas Board and taught engineering drawing and design at Wellingborough College. Mr. Bland married his wife Patricia in England in 1957. They have three daughters: Linda (Mrs. Wilde), Joanne (Mrs. Horne) and Jackie. Mr. Bland became a professional photographer after arriving in Lethbridge. He leased space in the A.E. Cross Studio at 710 3 Avenue South from 1966 until 1971, when Terry Bland Photography Limited moved to a newly constructed studio at 1224 3 Avenue South. Mr. Bland operated his business from there until ill health forced him to retire in 1992. Mr. Bland was an active citizen of Lethbridge and southern Alberta, and the following is a partial list of his volunteer activities: CATV Channel 12 advisory board, Lethbridge Community College nursing advisory board, Canadian Mental Health Association, Lethbridge Municipal Hospital board, Gyro Club of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Trans Alta Utilities advisory board (southern region), Travel and Convention Lethbridge. Mr. Bland also hosted a talk show on radio station CJOC from 1970 to 1990, and co-hosted a cooking show with local restaurant owner Truls Andren on television station CATV. He was also very interested in public health issues, and participated in a McGill University study on the health of Pincher Creek and district residents living near a sour gas well. Team leader Dr. Walter Spitzer named Mr. Bland a "co-investigator" for his work with the study. Near the end of his life, Mr. Bland became a proponent of the rights of terminally ill patients to oversee decisions about their treatment, or lack thereof. Terry Bland died of cancer on 18 February 1993.

Scope and Content

The fonds is composed of three series: General, Lethbridge Centennial and the CentreSite Project. The General series consists of a wide variety of events, buildings and landmarks, and aerial views taken in the City of Lethbridge and immediate vicinity. The series also contains one image of the Flying N Restaurant in Claresholm, Alberta and one portrait. The series' order is chronological. August 1965 to July 1988 The Lethbridge Centennial series is a comprehensive series of images taken of events and people associated with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the community. Mr. Bland was the official photographer employed by the Centennial Society. The series' order is chronological. Janaury 1985 to May 1986 The CentreSite Project series is a comprehensive series of images taken for the City of Lethbridge of the project to re-locate the Canadian Pacific Railway's tracks and yards from Lethbridge to Kipp, Alberta, and then to develop the land for residential and commercial use. Mr. Bland was the official photographer employed by the CentreSite Project. The series' order is chronological.
