Scope and Content

Tape 1 Side 2 only - Biographical information about the Goodman family. Came to Canada from England in 1904 living in Medicine Hat and High River before coming to Lethbridge. E.G. was born in Lethbridge. His siblings are: Eva Duke, Calgary; Aaron, Montreal (practiced law in Lethbridge); Leo, Lethbridge. The Goodman's owned a tailor shop and built the Goodman Building on 3rd Ave S between 7th and 8th Sirs in 1912. Family lived on the second floor. - The Goodman's raised their children in an Orthodox Jewish atmosphere. The Lethbridge branches of the National Council of Jewish Women was formed in 1 952, and Hadasah was formed in 1940's, but because the Jewish Community has declined it can't support two groups and only Hanasah is still active. They raise money for Israel projects relating to women, children and medical aids and also promote education among its members. - E.G. and Sharna's son resides in Isreal. - Lethbridge Synagogue: currently used for High Holiday services only. When the Jewish community numbered more, school was held Mon-Fri from 4-6 p.m. The children were taught Hebrew, Jewish history, customs, and traditions. - The synagogue was vandelized and defaced by two teenagers. It was a trying period for members of the Jewish community. - Most of the young Jewish people have moved. Dr. Hardirjis the only Jewish professional woman in Lethbridge that she is aware of. - Mrs E.G. Goodman, nee Sharna Bolcovske, family information: Grandparents immigrated from Russia in 1882 and settled in Winnipeg. The family was born and raised there. Her father was a cattle buyer and moved his family to Lethbridge in 1 935. Both her parents are dead and buried in the family plot in Winnipeg. approximately 30 mins long.
