Scope and Content: Side A - Ella came to Lethbridge in 191 1 . She did not have any children, but did raise some orphaned children. Did not live in Lethbridge the entire time. - Ella is 102 years of age and a resident of Southland Nursing Home. She is quite forgetful and there is little information in the interview. - George Watson speaks with Donna Parker, employee of the Southland Nursing Home, about the operation of the home. It opened February 1972. Two storey structure containing 150 beds, 75 on each floor. It was established as a nursing and supportive care institute for the elderly. To be admitted to the home, there must be a written recomendation from a physcian, which in turn is taken before a board to be approved. The individual wishing to get into the home is then interviewed to determine the type of care he or she requires. There is always a waiting list of individuals wanting to enter the home. To live in the home it costs the residents $5.00 per day for a ward room, $7.00 per day for a semi-private room, and $10.00 per day for a private room. Additional funding is received through a government subsidy. Residents are responsible for their own personal needs and clothing. It is a government owned and operated facility.
