Tape 1 Side A - Biographical information: Born in Nelson, B.C., 25 Jan 1901. Father worked for the Hudson's Bay Co. Family moved to Cowley, then Lethbridge, coming here by rail on the St. Mary's line. - Residences: final home is on 5th Ave & 14th Street South. Father lived with her until his death in 1949. - Describes a typical day in the year 1910. - Family was quarentined because of measles. - Describes a typical wash day. - Description of female attire: school clothes, Sunday clothes. Recalls that Dorothy and Betty Church wore the first knee highs. The Church family moved to Lethbridge from Toronto. - The Macleod, Freeman and Sherlock family picnics in the river valley. - Description of Henderson Lake Park. WWI anf&uf-daytli'e children from the schools would plant trees at the park. Each child was also given a tree to take home and plant. - IODE supplied refreshments. - Her aunt, Mrs Robert Sherlock was a gardener and brought a variety of flowers to Lethbridge from Ontario. She was the first to grow asparagus and horse radish. - Mentions Lethbridge oldtimers Conybeare, Hardie, and Church. Church's daughters still have their father's business records. - Clubs and service organizations: relief programs and Christmas hampers. SideB - Local physicians, particularly Dr. Mewburn who was a close family friend, and Gait Hospital. - Marjorie Sherlock - Typical family medicine cabinet and home remedies. - Higinbotham's Drug Store. Also remembers the jar of leeches in the back of the drugstore. - Christmas memories including her first time seeing a Christmas tree. - Family information: Father - Norman Torquil Macleod came west via Whoop-up trail at age 16 from Toronto. His first job was with IG Baker Co. Mother - Margaret Sherlock (her sister was married to a Freeman). Mother taught piano lessons and played the organ for the Church. They were married in December 1892. Tape 2 Side A - Continue family information. Mary Macleod (Col Macleod's wife) used to have a cigarette and scotch whiskey daily. The Kylaken Ranch in Pincher Creek was owned by the Macleod's. Many of her father's brothers and sisters settled in the Pincher Creek area. Lots of remittance men and French Canadians there as well. - Senator Gladstone and family. - Attitudes towards, and general opinions, about Natives. -Automobiles. She started driving around 1917. Flat tires were common. - First trip to Waterton and description of the buildings. Kootenay Brown and his wife. - WWI she lost 4 cousins. The exhibition grounds were used as a POW camp. IODE fund raising and knitting programs. Mrs George Robinson had 2 rooms in her house set up for IODE knitting groups. - Bawden Family: Joe had furniture store, Philip was killed in WWI, 3 sisters. Tape 2 Side B - Flu epidemic: businesses were closed, people stayed at home. - Family entertainment, including silent movies and talkies. Accompanying music at the silent movies was provided locally by Mr & Mrs Brown who played the violin and piano. - Sports. Women primarily played baseball and basketball. Natural outdoor skating rinks included: Freeman Lake, Duff Lake and Wallwork Lake. - Golf courses. - General descriptions.
