Scope and Content

Side A - Farris migrated to Canada from Britian, circa 1907. Sailed across on "Empress of Britian". - first job in Canada was on a farm near Burlington, Ontario. Names other jobs. - Met a man who was selling a return ticket to Lethbridge or Fort Macleod for $10.00, so he bought it, arriving in Lethbridge in March (1908?). - First job in Lethbridge was as a junior clerk for City of Lethbridge. He was promoted to accountant and then to City Treasurer, a position he held from 71914-1918. - Married a girl from England in 1913 at Hamilton, Ontario. They honeymooned at Niagrara Falls. Married for 63 years. - Lived in Victoria Mansions for one year, until their first child was born, then moved to a house on 7th Ave A South. Family biography: sons Les, Ron, Eric. - His children were raised in a Christian atmosphere and had a mother that stayed at home. - His advice to people: have Christian principles, budget your money, destiny shapes your life. Side B - In Britian, to prepare for a career, you had to article for a number of years at a nominal rate of pay. The firm he was articling for had a number of family members involved in the business, therefore deceasing his chances for advancement. This played a role in his decision to come to Canada - While employed for the City of Lethbridge he took correspondence courses in accounting. Employment history - Ended up going into business for himself. - Believes opportunities exist for single men and women in Canada providing an individual has education and drive. Key to employment happiness is the job should come first and the pay second. - Believes unemployment and economic conditions in Canada will worsen before getting better. - Mayors he worked under were Henderson, Adams, Hatch and Hardie. He felt Mayor Hardie was and excellent mayor who was fair and stuck to his budget. Mentions other city employees. - Residence and neighbors. - Mentions committess he served on and clubs he belonged to.
