The Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge is a service club which began in 1929 and was chartered that same year. Through the years the club was active in many community projects, the 4-H program in the 1940s, the funding of the Riverside Community Hall, a social centre for riverbottom residents, new cabins for Camp Inuspi a scout camp, the placing of the Boundary Peace tablet between Sweetgrass and Coutts, their fall Apple campaign, the sponsorship of the Lethbridge Junior Band in the 1960s, and the organization of the Lethbridge music Festival in 1953. The music festival began in the province wide in 1908 and was held alternately in the three major cities of Edmonton, Calgary & Lethbridge, Lethbridge having the festival for the very first time in 1916. The festival is comprised of several disciplines - bands, orchestras, creative music, strings, guitar, woodwinds brass percussion, handbells, pipe organ, electronic organ recorder, piano, speech, voice and choir and today speech arts and competitors vi for top honors and awards. A festival committee coordinates the event, music professionals from around the world come to adjudicate the performers, and awards & trophies are presented to those with the highest mark, most artistic performance, promising artists with marks of 80% or higher. The Kiwanis Club continues on today with their community service.
