History Biographical
Muriel Shortreed was born in Edmonton in 1922. Her father grew up on a farm near Guelph, Ontario before heading west to Edmonton in 1912. After serving in World War I he became a Coal Operator in Camrose and Three Hills. Her mother emigrated to Edmonton from Minnesota in 1899. Muriel was the Education Rep. to the Canadian Home Economics Association from Alberta and the first president of the Lethbridge Home Economics Association in 1968, serving in a number of other positions including that of the First Provincial President of the Home Economics Council, 1962. She was an Honorary Life Member of both the Alberta Teachers' Association and the Home Economics Council and she earned the Alberta Home Economics Association Distinguished Service Award. She was an Elder at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and taught advanced sewing classes at the college in addition to her career as a Home Economics teacher. She taught at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute for 33 years, retiring in 1983.
