History Biographical
Rowland Frank Brewin (8 June 1888 - 21 February 1978) was born in Whales to Samuel and Annie Brewin. He had four sisters, Gladys (b. 1889), Susie May (b.1891), Dulcie Blance (b.1892), and Kathleen Annie (b. 1895). Brewin briefly apprenticed with a the construction firm of E. C. Hughes at Wokingham, but left in 1904 and joined the 1st Battalation of the Royal Berkshire Infantry. He left the army just before coming to Canada in 1907. He worked in Calgary for a short time at an architectural firm before moving to Taber where he worked at the Canada West Mine building mine cars on contract. Soon he applied for a Homestead near Purple Springs and in 1912 married Hilda Winifred Yates in Taber, Alberta. They had three children that lived beyond infancy, Alfred Frank (b 1913), Hilda Monica (b. 1915) and Norman Reginald (b. 1918). After Hilda died of pneumonia in 1921, Brewin married Marjorie Shenfield in 1924 and together they had seven children that survived infancy: Fredrick John (b. 1926), Gerald Grimshaw (b. 1929), Rowland Frank (b. 1935), Eleanor Anne (b.1936), Desmond Rodney (b. 1938), Timothy Winston (b.1940) and Marjorie Jean, (b.1947). At the time of his death, Brewin was the last remaining homesteader in the Municipal District of Taber still living on his original howstead. He was presented with the Queen's silver Jubilee Medal for his services to his country and community.
