History Biographical

Beginning in 1995 a group of Lethbridge initiated the process of getting one of the new neighbourhoods in Lethbridge to name its streets after women that had contributed to the community. Under the leadership of chairperson Irma Dogterom, a committee was formed in 1999; members were: Irma Dogterom (Chair), Linda Cody, Georgia Fooks, Trish Hagen, Mary Oordt, Joan Nebelski, and Alderman Barbara Lacey. Frances Weaselfat joined the group and aided with fundraising initiatives. When Lethbridge City Council announced the development of a park northwest of 13th Street and 26th Avenue North the group requested that it be named for a woman. In a presentation to council in June 2001 the committee requested that a planned housing development in that area be named Legacy Ridge instead of Valleyview as was planned and that the streets and parks in the area be named for women. The request was approved and the project opened in August of 2005.
