- In the late 1970s and early 1980s, following the work of Dr. Menno Boldt (Boldt Report), Lethbridge became a leader in the research and implementation of comprehensive and innovative suicide prevention programs and services in Alberta, which had national and international significance. The Just Group, a branch of the national enterprise, decided to research, recover and preserve Alberta's history in suicide prevention through the Alberta Suicide Prevention History Project. The pilot phase of the project focused on Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, as this is where many of the significant actions originated. These actions represented by the people, committees, reports, ideas, concepts, programs and services, reflected in the records. In 1982, the Centre for Personal and Community Development, the Family Service Agency in Lethbridge was invited to become the Designated Centre for suicide prevention for this area of the Province by the Alberta Task Force on Suicide. This involved co-ordinating existing services and setting up new services such as suicide prevention crisis phone line. After reviewing the options, it was decided to organize a local branch of Samaritans - The Suicide Prevention Society of the Samaritans of Southern Alberta, modelled after the society by the same name in UK. The service was to be provided by specially trained volunteers.
