Photograph of Steve Kotch at his new bus, part of the fleet at Northern Bus Lines of Lethbridge, western Canada’s oldest bus line. This bus brought its fleet of inter-city highway buses to 11. Kotch, the owner-manager of the company was a third generation in this family business which was started by his grandfather S. F. Kotch. Northern started in 1927 and was closely tied to southern Alberta’s then-booming mining industry. The company name is related to the line’s first route which ran through the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District.Steve’s father Fred Kotch took over the company in 1929 and by the time he retired in in 1964, he had a fleet of 55 buses.
