History Biographical
Joseph Barton Watson was born on 25 May 1916 in Medicine Hat. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve at Calgary on 14 June 1944, and was taken on active service on 24 July 1944. Mr. Barton saw service in Canada and sea duty in the Atlantic zone where he was a crew member of HMCS Thorlock when it took the surrender of U190 on 11 May 1945, the first U Boat to escorted to New Foundland. While in the Navy, Mr. Watson played baseball for the Navy. He was demobilized and discharged at Calgary on 7 November 1945, with the rank of Supply Assistant. Following his military service, Mr. Watson was likely involved in agricultural business. He also continued to play baseball at the commercial league level. He passed away on 16 September 1966 at the age of 50.
