- History Biographical
- Edward Norman (Norm) Heinitz was born in 1914, the son of Jack and Mary Heinitz. The family was in Lethbridge from about 1920 on, and by 1923 Jack Heinitz was in the printing and stationery business with Earl B. Sloan. Norm Heinitz was a gifted amateur athlete, playing several different sports. In 1940 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 112th Battery, 18th Field Brigade RCA. In early 1941 Norm Heinitz received a promotion to Lieutenant as an artillery replacement officer. At about the same time, the role of the 112th Battery was changed to that of a light anti-aircraft battery as part of the 6th Light Anti-Aircraft Artillery RCA. In June 1942 Lieutenant Heinitz was posted to England, and received a promotion to Captain in January 1943. There is no mention of Norm Heinitz as an officer of the 112th Battery after November 1941. After World War 2 ended, Norm Heinitz returned to Lethbridge. He continued his military service in the local militia as a member of the 39th Battery, 18th Field Regiment RCA. In 1950 he was promoted to Captain in the militia, and in the late 1950s was the commanding officer of the 39th Battery. In 1963 Norm Heinitz left his job with Commercial Printers & Office Outfitters Limited. He and his father Jack opened Heinitz Stationers Limited at 324 9 Street South on 16 September 1963. The business continued until about 1989, although Norm and his wife Mary F. Heinitz had retired in 1988. Edward Norman Heinitz died in Lethbridge on 27 September 1996 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
