History Biographical
Award-winning artist Catherine Ann Abel pursued formal training from the Vancouver School of Art, the Pittsburgh Art Instritute and Disney Institute in Florida. Employed by CBC TV as a graphic designer and courtroom sketch artist, Ms. Abel has also taught a variety of art programs. While living in Barrie, Onatario, she became interested preservation of built heritage through historical paintings. She became known as a "Canadian Heritage Artist" able to depict in watercolors the character and authenticity of historical buildings. After moving to Lethbridge in 1999, Ms. Abel worked on several landmark buildings in the city, capturing the Galt Hospital, the High Level Bridge, the CPR Train Station, the No. 1 Firehall and the Post Office. The work involved a complex research into the history of the buildings, archival photographs and examination of the structures in their present state. Except for the buildings mentioned above, Ms. Abel was planning to do paintings of Fort Whoop-up, the Art Gallery, the Bowman Art Centre, the old and new buildings of the Court House and a series of residential buildings. The original painting of the Galt Hospital as well as limited edition prints are preserved in the Galt Museum and Archives.
