- History Biographical
- The Lethbridge Community Band Society (LCBS) began in 1987 thanks to the collaboration of Robert M. Cook, then the Director of the School of Fines Arts at the University, Barbara Walker, Coordinator of Music Programs for Lethbridge School District No. 51 and Bob Lewis, Principal of Gilbert Paterson School. The band was formed to fill a void in the music scene of the city by providing people of the community an opportunity to continue their enjoyment of playing. A second band was formed in 1988 for intermediate players and a beginners’ band was formed in 1989. The band[s] became a non-profit society in 1988 and in 1989 became a member of the Alberta Band Association. Of the 40 original members, seven remain with the band. The senior and intermediate bands underwent name changes throughout the past 23 years. The present Gold Band was called the Advanced, Senior or Thursday Band. The present Silver Band was referred to as the Intermediate or the Wednesday Band. Gold band conductors have been Bob Cook [1987-1997], Don Robb [1997-2007], Doug Scales [2007-2009] and Ken Rogers [2009-2016], Mark Ward [2017- present]. The Silver band conductors have been Arnold Mangold [1989-1991], Ken Rogers[1992-1999] Dennis Orr [1999-2002] Karen Fugita [2004-2010] and Sam Yamamoto [2010-present]. Bronze Band conductors included Arnold Mangold [1989] Dennis Orr [1999-2001] and Betty Upton [2001-2004]. By 2004, many of the players in the Bronze Band had advanced to the Silver Band and the Bronze Band was discontinued. A variety of commissioned works have been composed for the Gold Band. Titles include ‘Ride the Wind’ by David Squires [1997], ‘Concerto Del Garda’ by Elizabeth Raum [2003] and many works by Howard Cable [2001-2010]. The LCBS introduced the Frank Hosek Band Award in 1988. This award is given to a nominated musician of the band who has not only excelled in music but has contributed to the work of the LCBS behind the scenes. The award honours Frank Hosek, a musician, band conductor and music teacher in the Crowsnest Pass and later in Lethbridge. The bands of the LCBS have won several awards through the years. The Gold Band received the Silver Trumpet Award for outstanding band; several Senior Competition Awards, Grade V, Kiwanis Music Festival; the Sudler Silver Scroll Award; and the Gold Award, 2004 Alberta International Band Festival. The Gold Band was also named “Alberta’s Best” in 1993. The Silver Band had won awards at several Kiwanis Music Festivals. The LCBS bands have several concerts throughout the year: Spring and Christmas, Canada Day and Remembrance Day. The bands also play at festivals and other community events when invited.
