- History Biographical
- Variously known as the Ardley Hardite Mine, the Diamond Mine, Federal Mine No. 3 and the Lethbridge Diamond Mine, this mine was located in Section 6 - Township 10 - Range 21 - W4M close to where the community of Diamond City was estbalished. The total coal production of the mine was 319,700 metric tonnes of coal. The mine was opened in March 1905 by Charles Padley, who also served as the pastor of the Lethbridge Baptist Tabernacle. The early ownership of the mine is complicated to determine. From June 1918 to November 1923 the Trust & Gaurantee Company was operating the mine on behalf of the bondholders in the previous company, Union Collieries Limited. On 2 November 1923, operation of the mine was taken over on lease by the Consolidated Diamond Collieries Limited of Calgary. They in turn abandoned the mine on 15 December 1929, and on 2 March 1932 the mine was permanently sealed. [Source: Johnston, Alex et al. Lethbridge: Its Coal Industry.
