- History Biographical
- In 1928 John David Higinbotham moved his drug store to new premises at 622 4 Avenue South, on the ground floor of the new Marquis Hotel. On 30 April 1929 Mr. Higibotham sold his business to Alexander M. Sutherland, who ran it as the A.M. Sutherland Drug Company until 1947, when George R. Willoughby bought the pharmacy and renamed it the Willoughby McDermid Drug Company. Alexander Martin Sutherland was born in Warkworth, Ontario. In 1903 he settled in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, where he opened a drug store. Mr. Sutherland married his first wife Bathia (nee Asher) in 1906. In 1938 Mr. Sutherland married his second wife Kathleen (nee Terrill) in Vancouver. He came to Lethbridge in 1929 and purchased the J.D. Higinbotham & Company drug store. He operated the business until 1947, when sold the pharamcy and moved to Kaleden, British Columbia. In 1951 Mr. Sutherland retired and returned to Lethbridge, where he lived until his death on 5 August 1954. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge.
