- History Biographical
- The idea for what became the National Air Tour is credited to Harvey Campbell of the Detroit Board of Commerce. He envisioned a tour that would promote the reliability of aircraft and air travel. A committee of Detroit businessmen organized the first air tour in 1925. Edsel Ford donated a trophy valued at $4,850 and called the 'Edsel B. Ford Trophy'. The title of the first air tour was the Edsel B. Ford Reliability Tour for the Development of Commercial Aviation. It was eventually shortened to the National Air Tour. The National Air Tour was an efficiency contest that allowed aircraft manufacturers to showcase their latest models, make business contacts in the cities the tour visited, and generally promote air travel to the public. The National Air Tour was held each year from 1925 through 1931. Source of information: National Air Tour website at www.nationalairtour.org/history.
