History Biographical

Oto Kanashiro was born in Okinawa, Japan. She married Bokujin Kanashiro, and together the couple had ten children: Aki, Hiro, Sumiko, Nori, Kim (married surname Bruce), Toshio, Sue, Dan, Florence (married surname McCallum), and Tom Medoruma. In 1942 the Kanashiro family was relocated from their home in Ocean Falls, British Columbia to the Iron Springs district of southern Alberta. They later moved to the Broxburn area before finally taking up residence in Lethbridge in 1958. Mrs. Kanashiro was an active member of the Lethbridge Japanese United Church, and the Japaense community in southern Alberta generally. Oto Kanashiro died on 12 October 1992, age 86, and is buried in Moutain View Cemetery in Lethbridge.
