- History Biographical
- The donor's family came to Canada from Nitra, Czechoslovakia in 1938. Their ship was one in the last convoy allowed to leave the port of Hamburg before it was closed by the Nazis. The family settled in the Barnwell district and farmed. The donor's father, John (Jan) Liska, had experience of sugar beet farming that gave him an advantage when the family settled here. This is the first cook book the donor's mother had after the family arrived in Canada. Mrs. Liska did not speak or read English well, and the donor often translated the recipes for her.
