- History Biographical
- Nicholas Sheran opened the first commercial coal mine in what became Alberta, in 1874. The mine was on the west side of what is now the Oldman River, about 100 metres north of what is now Whoop Up Drive in Lethbridge, Alberta. He sold coal to the traders moving north and south along the Whoop Up Trail, and to the North West Mounted Police at Fort Macleod.
