- History Biographical
- The Lethbridge Business and Professional Women’s Club received its charter from the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs on 13 January 1988. The first officers of the organization were Leah Waters (president), Anne Atwood (vice president), Colleen Hett (recording secretary), Colleen Smith (treasurer), Lynn Herkins (correspondence secretary), Lorraine Thompson (publicity and public relations), Anne Todd (federation promotions) and Pat Bunn (projects and programming). The objectives of the club included improvement of economic, employment and social conditions for women; to stimulate women’s interest in all levels of government; to assist and train women in business, industry and professions; and to affiliate with other organizations to promote mutual interests. Active membership in the club was open to women working in a business or profession, while associate membership was open to women who were not currently employed but supported the goals of the organization. Students working toward careers in business or in a profession were also welcome. The Lethbridge Business and Professional Women’s Club was a part of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, and the national organization was in turn part of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women. Among the activities sponsored by the Lethbridge Business and Professional Women’s Club over the years were a Trade Fair, the Linda Barvir Benevolent Award (established in 1988), the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs’ provincial convention (1991), and the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs national convention (1998).
