History Biographical
The Alberta Institute of Agrologists was founded as the result of discussions held at two meetings at the University of Alberta on 22 March and 19 April 1943. At that time, agrologists in the province belonged to the Canadian Society of Technical Agriculturalists (CSTA), founded in Winnipeg in 1921. However, Alberta agrologists felt that the CSTA did not represent them well, specifically in influencing government policy at the provincial and national levels and achieving recognized professional status for the members. In June 1945 the CSTA reorganized. Its name was changed to the Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC) and provincial councils were created. The Alberta Provincial Council of the AIC held its first meeting in April 1946, and one of its priorities was legal recognition of the profession of agrologist by the provincial government. The result was that on 31 March 1947, royal assent was given to the Agrologists Act, which created the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) and gave qualified members of the AIA sole right to use the designation 'Agrologist' within the province. The AIA quickly set about establishing criteria for qualifications as an Agrologist. In 1966 the government of Alberta passed the 'Universities Act' into law. The new legislation gave responsibility for establishing professional standards to a Co-ordinating Council. The Agrologists Act was amended at the same time, and the AIA became one of the professional regulatory bodies that have entered into an agreement with the Alberta government to formally regulate the activities of its members within their respective professions.
