History Biographical
Irene Eleanor Wheeler, 1914-1996, was born in Hardieville, Alberta and raised near Milk River, Alberta. She later spent much of her life in and near Fort Macleod, Alberta with the exception of a few years in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was a well-known folk artist, writer, and photographer. She published several books of poetry, including Enjoy My World, and an autobiography, Ladders We Climb. For many years she wrote a column for the Lethbridge Herald newspaper about cowboy life on her ranch in the Porcupine Hills. She also wrote columns for the Chinook Reporter, Fort Macleod Gazette, and Pincher Creek Echo newspapers. She was active with the Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies Auxiliary. In 1934 she married David J. McCaugherty, 1906?-1981, and they had one son, Ronald. In 1992 she received an Alberta Achievement Award, and in 1995 the University of Lethbridge conferred an honorary doctorate on her.
