Lethbridge West MLA John Gogo

History Biographical: John Albert Gogo was born on 15 February 1932, the son of George Allen and Mamie Gogo (nee Gillespie). John Gogo and his wife Joyce have five children: Susan, Sandra, Sharon, Steven and Shannon. Mr. Gogo took economic extension courses from the University of Alberta. He joined the Canadian Army in 1949 and saw service in the Korean War. From 1960 to 1975 he was the manager of Investors Syndicate. In 1975 Mr. Gogo ran in in the provincial election for the Conservative Party, and was elected the MLA for the riding of Lethbridge West. He won re-election in 1979, 1982 and 1986. He remained in the legislature for 18 years, until 1993. From November 1985 to December 1992 Mr. Gogo served as Alberta's Minister of Advanced Education. He also served as Chair of the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC). Mr. Gogo was the president of the Lethbridge Rotary Club (1972) and the Lethbridge chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society (1970-1973). He also was a director of the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and Big Brothers. In 2007 the University of Lethbridge awarded John Gogo an honourary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD).
