History Biographical

Thomas Walton Kirkham was born in Lethbridge in 1913, one of six children of James Stanley and Jessie F. Kirkham. His brothers and sisters included James, Ruby, George, Philip and Donald. He received his primary and secondary education in Lethbridge, and then studied engineering at the University of Alberta. Tom Kirkham entered the hotel and tourism business in Waterton Lakes National Park, and later spent 19 years in the transportation industry with a variety of companies including Greyhound Bus Lines, Canadian Freightways and Trans Canada Air Lines. Following that, Mr. Kirkham was employed by the City of Calgary for 23 years in systems management. He was a member of the Association of Systems Management, the Canadian Micrographic Society, the Association of Records Managers and Administrators, the Internal Auditors Association and the Alberta chapter of the International Risk Managers Association. Following his retirement from the City of Calgary, Tom Kirkham spent 5½ years with the Alberta Historical resources Foundation, interviewing over 250 southern Albertans who contributed to the history of the province. The audio tapes of those interviews are housed in the Glenbow Archives and Provincial Archives of Alberta. He was the designer of, and driving force behind, the historical marker approximately 10 miles west of Lethbridge on Highway 3. Married to Dorothy, the couple had two sons, Robert and Harold.
