History Biographical
The Alberta Agricultural Interpretive Centre Joint Steering & Review Committee (AAICJS&RC) had its beginning in a meeting held on 26 January 1982 of the Travel and Convention Association of Southern Alberta and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from southern Alberta. Mayor Andrew C. Anderson of Lethbridge also attended the meeting. The meeting covered several issues of importance to the Chinook Country Tourist Zone, including the creation of a provincial agricultural interpretive centre. The centre was initially envisioned as a facility with several functions: a research centre; a place to exhibit and explain proposed government projects in agriculture; a venue to promote the ‘Buy Alberta’ campaign on a year-round basis; and a conference centre for all those involved in agriculture in Alberta. John J. Banfield, the Chair of the ad-hoc committee created at the 26 January 1982 meeting, wrote to the Minister of Agriculture on 8 February 1982 explaining the idea, suggesting terms of reference for the committee and asking for support. Minister of Agriculture Dallas W. Schmidt encouraged the committee to proceed and suggested that C.S. Clark, Alberta Agriculture’s Regional Director in Lethbridge, act as liason to the Minister’s office. The AAICJS&RC was composed of 17 individuals with a wide range of experience in agriculture in southern Alberta. Farmers, ranchers, academics, scientists, businessmen, members and employees of various associations, and government officials were all represented. John J. Banfield remained the Chair, and by September 1982 the committee had prepared two documents for submission to the provincial government; a “Concept Report and Recommendations” and “Proposed Alberta Agricultural Interpretive Centre: Location Criteria”. However, in late 1982 Dallas W. Schmidt was replaced as Minister of Agriculture by E. Leroy Fjordbotten. Although the committee continued until 1985, the priorities of the provincial government changed and the AAICJS&RC’s report and recommendations were never acted upon.
