History Biographical

Although the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association was founded in 1954, the history of minor hockey in Lethbridge goes back to 1948–1949, when Syd Hall coached the Lethbridge Columbus Club midgets to the provincial finals, where they lost to a team from Edmonton. Also in the 1948–1949 season, Lawrence Bruchet coached the Lethbridge Native Son Catelli’s to their second straight Alberta juvenile championship, and then to the Western Canada championship. During the 1950–1951 season three Lethbridge Native Son hockey teams reached the provincial finals, including the Native Son juveniles coached by Doc Lee, the Native Son bantams coached by Norm Tiller and the Native Son midgets coached by Syd Hall. Unfortunately, Lethbridge was beaten in all three divisions by teams from Edmonton. In 1954 the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association (LMHA) was organized. Addie Donaldson was named the LMHA’s first president. Other members of the executive were Syd Hall, Jack Harvey, Ted Allen, Harold Stouffer and Dimitri Goloubef. The LMHA was open to players from Grade 7 to 20 years of age, and consisted of about 200 players on three juvenile teams, four midget teams, and four bantam teams. Coaches in the LHMA’s first season included Howie Yanosik, Syd Hall, Leo Harrold and Hector Negrello. Among the championships won by teams from the LMHA, Syd Hall’s juvenile team captured the Alberta juvenile B championship for four consecutive seasons beginning in 1954–1955, and the team coached by Bev Cook and Peter Canan took the provincial midget A title in 1958–1959. In 1970–1971 the Associated Commercial Travelers (ACT) bantam rep team coached by Harry Osmond won the provincial bantam title, while the midget rep team coached by Alf Bruchet and Ed McDonald captured the provincial midget championship. In 1971–1972 Harry Osmond again coached the (ACT) bantam rep team to the provincial title. Many of the same players were on the Lethbridge Midget Elks club the following season when that team won the 1972–1973 Alberta championship. In 1980–1980 the juvenile team coached by Jack Taylor won an Alberta championship. By the 1985-1986 season, the LMHA boasted nearly 1,000 players from age six to juveniles, playing on a total of 61 teams from the pre-mite to juvenile divisions. The fonds consists of a photograph album and 10 individual photographs, as well as two pamphlets. The photographs, with one exception, are all of teams who played in the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association.
