History Biographical

Vivien Corinne Van Wart was born at Grainger, Alberta on 15 May 1919 to Eldwin Hardinge and Frances Van Wart. After completing her education at a business college, Vivien worked for a number of companies over the years, including: Enerson Motors, Beny Chev Olds, Time Air and Young, Parkyn & McNab. Vivien married George Douglas Goodrich in Calgary on 5 April 1943 and they had one son, Douglas Van Goodrich. A member of Southminster United Church, Vivien Goodrich taught Sunday School. She was also a supporter of the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association. Her greatest accomplishments were, however, as an equestrian. Vivien Goodrich was a founding member of the Chinook Arabian Horse Association (1963) and the Southern Alberta Equestrian Council (1974). She founded the Alberta Horsemen's Council (1973), The Old Man Pinto Club (1975) and the Southern Alberta Trail Riders Association (1984). Mrs. Goodrich has also been an active supporter of the following organizations: Lethbridge 4-H Light Horse Club, Trail Riders Alberta Conference, Alberta Equestrian Federation, Alberta Summer Games, Whoop Up Saddle Club and the Golden Age Equestrian Club. Mrs. Goodrich has been a competitor in many trail rides and horse shows. Vivien Goodrich received the following awards: Alberta Equestrian Federation Appreciation Plaques (1981 and 1983), Canadian Government Merit Award (1983), Alberta Achievement Award (1984), Appreciation Certificate from the Lethbridge handicapped Riding Association (1987), Alberta Equestrian Federation Award (1989), Lethbridge Convention Bureau Host Award (1990) and an award from the Province of Alberta for Service to the Alberta Seniors Games (1990). Vivien Goodrich died in Lethbridge on 12 April 2009 at age 89.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of an application nominating Mrs. Goodrich to the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame, a submission from the Southern Alberta Equestrian Council for increased support, condition reports from the Chief Mountain Ride of 1976, and a team photograph of the Lethbridge generals midget baseball team coached by her husband George.
