History Biographical
Dr. Lloyd Daniel Clancy D.C. was the first chiropractor licensed in the Province of Alberta. He was also a founder of the Alberta Chiropratic Association (ACA) in 1917. Dr. Clancy assisted in writing the first Chiropratic Act in Alberta, which came into law in 1923, and also the agreement under which chiroprators could treat patients under the Workmen’s Compensation Board (WCB). Alberta was the first province in Canada to permit WCB coverage for chiropractic. Dr. Clancy began his practice in Medicine Hat, but later moved to Lethbridge. He served as vice-president of the ACA from 1917 to 1920, and as president from 1923 until 1943. In 1962 Dr. Clancy received the Chiropractor of the Year award from the ACA, and in 1963 the Silver Service award as well. In addition, the ACA recognized Dr. Clancy with the Past President’s award in 1965 and the Golden Award for 50 years of service in 1972. The Canadian Chiropratic Association bestowed Honour Membership on Dr. Clancy in 1970. Dr. Clancy and his wife Mary Catherine had four children: Lloyd D. Clancy Junior, Bernard J., Mary Magdelin and Katherine Clancy. The Clancy home was at 423 12 Street South in Lethbridge. Dr. Clancy died at his home on 29 September 1972 and buried in Mountain View Cemetery with his wife Mary Catherine (died 17 July 1990), daughter Mary Magdelin (died 20 April 2004), son Lloyd Daniel Jr. (died 23 April 1995).
